The Value of a Shower Filter:
Many customers who purchase a Regency II water ionizer for healthy drinking water are now beginning to ask about shower filters. They wonder if showering with chlorinated water is a healthy choice. The surprising answer is “No”! It is not a healthy choice. Did you know that far more contaminates are absorbed through the skin during a shower than by drinking water?
When showering, hot water opens the pores and chlorine and other contaminates are absorbed through the skin. This process by-passes the digestive system and goes directly into the blood stream. Tests show that your body can absorb more chlorine by taking a ten minute shower than by drinking 8 glasses of the same water.
Another area of concern is the inhalation of the fumes. In the shower stall, the hot water produces steam in a confined area, making it easy to inhale chlorine and other waterborne gases.
With the removal of chlorine, hydrogen sulfide and other chemicals, dry skin and harsh effects on hair and scalp disappear. Natural oils remain in the scalp and the dryness is gone. Customers who dye their hair may find the “true” color remains longer because chlorine, an oxidizer of the coloring dye, is removed.
One of the most dramatic and appreciated results of showering in filtered water is the incredibly clean rinse it provides. The surface tension of the water is reduced and the shower water penetrates the hair and scalp providing a clean rinse, removing shampoo buildup and stopping soap scum buildup.
There also is the added advantage of not precipitating a hard water soap scale on shower tile and glass doors as well as the skin. Reduced deposits of calcium and magnesium carbonate mean scale from hard water will not be deposited anywhere in the shower area.
Early models of shower filters were inline models. Some consumers complained that the filters intruded too deeply into the shower stall restricting room. Over the last few years new models have emerged that use a backflow design – the shower filter is recessed back over the shower pipe taking up no more room than a normal shower head nozzle would. This is a much more consumer-friendly design.
The best and most effective shower filters are not made with carbon block: one media of choice is a formulation of copper and zinc granules, known as KDF or oxidation-reduction (redox) media. There are many formulations of redox media that provide varying degrees of results depending on the chemical nature of the water going to the consumer’s home.
The bottom line is showering in filtered water not only reduces health risks, but is a pleasure to use and in many cases makes skin and hair feel softer and look better because natural oils are left in the scalp and skin.
