What is Ozone?
by Dr. Zoltan P. Rona MD MSC
Most of us know ozone as part of the stratosphere that surrounds the earth at an altitude of approximately 12 miles. This ozone layer is developed by the action of ultraviolet light on oxygen and is an essential shield against solar radiation. In the lab, ozone can be generated by silent electric discharges or spark-overs through air or pure oxygen. Ozone has a characteristic sweet odour like that perceived after heavy thunderstorms.
There are many mistaken beliefs about ozone. Several reports in the media have stated tha tozone is a toxic gas, a pollutant, and a carcinogen (cancer causing agent). Photochemical oxidants caused by car and truck emissions such as nitric oxide have been referred to as "toxic ozone levels". This is a false and misleading label since ozone is really not a component of photochemical smog.
If ozone is inhaled in large quantities, it can be toxic. The same is true of oxygen, water, and any other nutrient. To categorically say that "ozone is toxic" is as ridiculous as saying that 'water is toxic". Toxicity is a matter of degree. For ozone, oxygen, and water to become toxic, huge amounts (far more than the levels used in therapy) would have to be consumed. According to the Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology: "During the 80-year history of the large-scale usage of ozone, there has never been a human death attributed to it."
Scientific studies since the 1930's have shown that ozone is neither a pollutant, toxic gas, nor a carcinogen. Simply stated, ozone is a special form of Oxygen (O3 and not O2). Ozone has never been demonstrated to be involved in any free radical reactions. Thus, it does not and cannot cause any cellular damage compatible with aging or degeneration. (It should not be confused with hydrogen peroxide which, as a therapy, has been documented to produce dozens of harmful side effects).
Ozone does not contribute to air and water pollution. If anything, it can clear it up.
It has been used to purify water in many European countries, instead of chlorine, because it does not produce any carcinogenic by-products. Chlorine does. Chlorine and other chemicals from gasoline and diesel powered vehicles are linked to countless chronic diseases, including cancer. The city of Los Angeles has replaced the use of chlorination for drinking water by the largest ozone water purification system in the world. Othe rmajor North American cities will soon follow suit.
Ozone is safe when injected into the body (intravenously, intramuscularly, etc), in the prescribed therapeutic amounts. It does not produce emboli. When injected into the bloodstream, ozone breaks down into extra oxygen and enhances blood flow. It destroys viruses, bacteria, fungi, pyrogens, and cancer cells. There is no bacteria, virus, fungus, or spore that can survive in the presence of ozone. This explains the rapid clearing of symptoms in chronic fatigue syndrome and candidiasis cases.
Cancer cells are killed by ozone, yet healthy cells are unaffected. The theory is that cancer is a plant cell and can thus be killed by its waste product, namely oxygen. AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome, herpes, and other venereal diseases, hepatitis, mononucleosis, circulatory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, skin ulcers, infected wounds, gangrene, burns, colitis, psoriasis, almost all skin disorders, and many other diseases can be eliminated with the help of the extra oxygen supplied by ozone therapy. The world literature is rich with documentation for the use of ozone therapy in all these conditions.
Despite numerous studies, case histories, and sworn testimonials, the majority of the medical profession in North America knows little, if anything, about ozone therapy. Some physicaians have even lost their licences to practice medicine for simply using ozone in their practices. Non-physicians have been convicted of practicing medicine without a licence and jailed as a result of dispensing ozone therapy.
Lucas Boeve, the inventor of the ozone bath "Enhancer" was harassed for years by government officials simply because he provided free ozone therapy to cancer victims in Miami. Many patients had their therapies cancelled by the Feds when Boeve was forced to leave the country in 1990.
Much like other dramatically effective natural therapies (eg. EDTA intravenous chelation therapy), the North American medical establishment is unlikely to accept or implement ozone therapy without double blind studies. This is despite the fact that many "conventional" therapies such as chemotherapeutic drugs, coronary bypass surgery, and psychoanalysis are allowed to flourish unchecked and have never been subjected to double blind studies.
Proponents admit that more scientific studies are needed on the clinical applications of ozone therapy. They argue, however, that since ozone therapy is so non-toxic, why not at least allow doctors in Canada and the U.S. to use it in clinical trials with informed patient consent. There are 15 countries in Europe, Central and South America, and many doctors around the world who use ozone therapy. Spas like the one in Sosua are seeing clients not only from Canada and the U.S. but from around the world.
