Health
Canada Advisory Rebuttal on Ozone Generators

Health
Canada advises the public about air cleaners designed to intentionally
generate ozone (Ozone generators)
You
can advise, I can advise, and any one can advise. The question is
- is the advice sound or bogus?
It is common for people to use their credentials or agencies and their clout
to sell bogus information for what ever their gain may be.
On January 21, 1999, at that Teleconference, Health Canada announced their
intention to issue this Advisory. Participants were given five minutes to express
their views. (rebuttals are in green)
The Rebuttal on Health Canada's Advisory:
Ottawa -
Health Canada is advising the public not to use air cleaners designed to intentionally
generate ozone (ozone generators) in their homes. Health Canada is concerned
with the adverse health effects that may result from the deliberate exposure
of the public to ozone from air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone
gas.
* Ozone is an irritant that can cause coughs, chest discomfort, and irritation
of the nose and throat. The direct and purposeful generation of ozone indoors
should be avoided.
**Ozone is NOT an irritant
that can cause coughs, chest discomfort, and irritation of the nose and throat.
It is scientifically impossible. Perhaps other gases, but not ozone.
Authority: Dr. Clark Thorp, Ph.D., M.D. Acting Chairman, Department
of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Armour Research Foundation, Illinois
Institute of Technology. "Pure Ozone is non-toxic even in concentrations as great as 20 to 50 parts per million of air." Hill, a physician specializing in industrial hygiene states, "Pure ozone is not poisonous in any sense of the word as it breaks down in contact with the mucus membrane and only oxygen remains."
Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) chart, reflect
non-symptomatic levels of ozone to be 50 ppm for up to 10 minutes.
*Following
a review of current information and in consultation with Health Canada
and others, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) recently made the
decision not to certify these products for household use and issued
new interim requirements for commercial units.
**Care Tech Industries, Inc. has been in dealings with CSA for over a year
and have not before, or to date, (March 13, 1999) received any notification
from CSA on this alleged decision. No other ozone generator manufacturer has
either, to my knowledge. If this is true, why haven't the Manufactures been
made aware of this decision by CSA prior to this statement?
*Health
Canada advises all owners of ozone generators to stop using them in
their homes. Owners of commercial ozone generators are advised to
either discontinue use or have their devices tested to ensure that
recommended exposure levels for ozone are not exceeded. Commercial
ozone generators should never be used in homes.
**"Or have their devices tested?" By
who? For what? CSA admitted that they don't know how to test ozone generators
and never have! Does Health Canada have the facilities and intend to do the
testing for the people?
Your "recommended exposure levels" can
not possibly be based on scientific evidence. Not acceptable. OSHA's standard for ozone is 0.1 part of ozone per million parts of air (ppm)
averaged over an eight-hour work shift, and an occasional .3ppm for short time
exposure.
In fact, OSHA is the ONLY agency that has non-biased studies and tests on the
use of ozone in the environment and the possible health risks at extremely
high levels.
*Products
affected include portable, bread-box sized units that plug into the
wall, and some smaller units that may be battery-powered. The units
have one or more control knobs or switches on the front face. Most
devices of this kind have been sold door-to-door and not in retail
outlets. This warning does not apply to any other type of air cleaners
such as mechanical filter-type air cleaners or electrostatic precipitators.
**The true product affected is Health Canada's integrity! We are aware of the
existence of some primitively made ozone generators that produce other gases
in the process of generating ozone. What about those that don't? Health Canada
is deliberately attempting to hinder our business (those that don't) while
wrongfully misleading the public.
*Health
Canada is working with manufacturers and distributors of air cleaners
designed to intentionally generate ozone to voluntarily recall any
ozone generators (residential or commercial) sold to consumers for
household use.
**We
communicate with many manufacturers and distributors
and never heard of one that has been approached by
Health Canada to date. Even if they were, do you really
think that they will participate in a recall when there
is over a million machines sold?
This statement really
implies that the public is gullible and stupid!
